The second-generation 9-3 model was launched at the North American International Auto Show in early 2002 for the 2003 model year. The new 9-3, like most Saabs, remained a front-wheel drive car. The most drastic change from the former generation was the elimination of the hatchback design. The second-generation 9-3 is available as a four-door saloon, an estate (introduced late in 2005, known as the Sport Wagon, Sport Combi or Sport Hatch), and a two-door convertible (introduced in 2004).
